I have never really cared for the term soul retrieval, because it is not possible to 'loose' your soul, but the majority of people have heard this term, so I use the term here due to familiarity.  Normally, a person has not only one animal in their Underworld, but several. Soul retrieval is called for when a person has had their totem, or power animal leave them.  This normally happens when a person is ignoring their path, or doing things that they know to be the opposite of what they should do.  The power animal simply goes to a person that they can actually work with.

'Soul retrieval' is the process of going on a Shamanic journey, finding an animal that is willing to work with the person, and blowing the animal into the person's Underworld.  The process is usually very quick and ultimately painless.  I always follow soul retrieval with spiritual counseling.  Nine, out of ten times, the client knows why their previous power animal left, and understands how to not repeat their actions, but I always talk with the client and teach them how to work with and honor their totem.
